Wherever possible always use free cutting materials. Stainless and mild steel is manufactured in free cutting grades.

Always check dimensional settings. Check your default settings on AutoCAD; are they set to a tight tolerance and does your job really need it. Machining to a tight tolerance is always more expensive.
- Benefit – Open tolerances are easier and faster to machine
- Advantage to you – you pay for less machining time
Check the depth of threaded holes. Generally, 1.5X thread diameter will give optimal thread strength. If tapped holes are too deep the risk of tool breakage increases and may be included into the price. The process will take longer and cost you more.
- Benefit – Shallow holes are easier and faster to machine with less breakages
- Advantage to you – you pay for less machining time
Wherever possible remove any tapers or radius edges that are not going to be seen or will be covered. Keep the shape simple.
